Candied

Six months into 2020 and I'm on quilt #9. 

This quilt was super easy to make from start to finish. I think the hardest part was deciding on the quilting design.

The pattern is called Candy Store and is in the Love of Quilting (May/June 2012) magazine. 

The pattern uses 2½-inch strips which I cut from my stash of fat quarters.  I used 18 fat quarters plus a yard of fabric for the center of the blocks so it's super scrappy.

This quilt is featured on the cover of the magazine and what caught my eye was the grey sashing, borders, and binding. I don't know if I've mentioned this but grey is my favorite color. I used fabric from my thrift store sheet for all of that.

The quilting design that I decided on was just a simple straight line diamond grid pattern. It was super easy which I needed since the design I first planned would have taken twice as long and by the time I had gotten to the quilting phase (June 17th), I had decided I wanted to make a Fourth of July quilt.  So I needed something super easy and super fast. Thankfully I got it quilted in just 1 day and I sewed all of the binding on by machine instead of my usual way, which is to machine sew it to the front of the quilt and then hand sew the binding to the quilt back. The quilt was completed on June 19th. Whew.

The quilt finished at 50" x 66.5".

Target Practice Finish

Happy Mother's Day!!!

I hope you all have had a great weekend and are spending today celebrating the special women in your lives.

Today I'm sharing my Target Practice quilt.  Yes...it is finally finished and I couldn't be happier. It was a challenge but as most challenges go...it was totally worth the effort.

I took a bunch of photos. So here we go...

The quilt has 36 blocks each finished at 10".
The quilting design is stitch-in-the-ditch and on the border, I stitched triangles (mostly successfully).

The arrows are made up of 2 1/2" strips from my stash and the white background fabric, as well as the backing, are all from thrift store sheets.  The border and binding are from JoAnn's. The overall size of the quilt is 66" x 66".

The label is wrong...it should have said May 2019 but the quilting
took longer than expected and I didn't think to change it soon enough.

The Paris Quilt

Hello everyone!

Today I'm sharing photos of the Paris quilt that I've been working on for the past couple of weeks. It actually went together fairly quickly and I'm very pleased with the outcome. So much so that I might be doing another one in the near future.  

I wish I could take better photos. I should have taken this outside but I was feeling lazy.

Anyway, the quilt finished at 60" x 68" (after washing and drying). There are a total of 99 total blocks (each block is 6" x 8"). And a total of 400 strip pieces. 

The fabrics used in the quilt are as follows:
Ink & Arrow Black Square Dot Blender, Ink & Arrow White Square Dot Blender, Brother Sister Design Studio Paris Writing 2012 (Made for Hobby Lobby), Joann's Jelly Rolls and 7 piece FQ Bundle Vintage Floral & Keys in pink, black and white, and stash fabrics. The backing is a white thrift store sheet and the binding is made from leftover jelly roll strips. 

The quilting for this is a diagonal grid or crosshatch and the lines are 4" apart.

Working on a New Quilt

 Hi everyone.

A couple of months ago I brought a couple of jelly rolls from JoAnn's and needed to make something with them. (Why does JoAnn's sell their jelly rolls with only 20 pieces, meaning we have to buy 2 of them for most quilts?) I had been looking for a pattern for a while now and fell in love with the look of strip quilts. But most of them had strips of the same size and I wanted something where I didn't have to worry about matching up seams.  So based on a couple of online tutorials and pictures I started cutting up the jelly rolls and some fat quarters. Here is a picture of the piles of cut up fabric.

            

The strips were cut into 2.5" x 6.5" quarters were cut up into 1.5" x 6.5" and 3.5" x 6.5" rectangles. I cut way more rectangles then I ultimately needed but since I didn't know exactly what I was going to do I thought more would be better.  In total, I think I cut almost 500 rectangles.

I finally came up with a design and was able to use my EQ8 software to draw it out.

I decided to sew the rectangles into blocks instead of long strips. So I  came up with 5 blocks (A - E) each block measuring 6.5" x 8.5".  Based on the above picture the quilt will be 68" X 74" and have 400 rectangles but I haven't finalized the design yet because I have a lot of rectangles left over so I might include a piano key border.  Or make extra blocks to use on the back.
Still trying to figure that out but we'll see what happens.

So far I've made the A Blocks.  And I'm really excited about how they look. And can't wait to see how this comes out. 

Unlike most of my quilts, this quilt already has a name. The fabric from JoAnn's has the Eiffel Tower and other French writings and so I came up with Paris as the name.

What Happened to the Jelly Roll Race?

Remember this... it's a Jelly Roll Race that I was working on a few weeks ago.  It was made from three jelly rolls that I got at Jo-Ann's. Before I took this picture I thought it was too narrow so I put borders on it.  Then it sat on my design wall for a while and the more I looked at it the more I didn't like it.

After searching online for inspiration on what to do with it I decided to cut it up. So I took the borders off and cut it into four large pieces...

and then sewed it back together. 

And I ended up with 2 baby size quilts. 

The first has a border and is named "Bindama" which is Japanese for glass (fishing) floats.

The 2nd one is named "Sea Glass" and does not have a border.

You might be wondering where I got the names for the quilts.
The colors reminded me of the glass fishing floats and pieces of sea glass.  I first saw glass fishing floats when I was stationed in Okinawa.



I'm really glad I took the risk to cut the jelly roll race top because I really think they look much better this way.

All in all the jelly roll race is a quick and easy way to use up 2.5" strips but I don't think I will be making another one. There wasn't enough randomness in it for me. Too many of the same strips were next to each other.  But at least now I know and I can mark this off my to-do list.
