Amelia Quilt

Hi there!

Just stopping in to share my latest quilt finish - Amelia. She started from fabric I brought at JoAnn's last year (I think it was last year) along with some leftover fabric from the Boundless Ruby Fleur fabric (which is from Craftsy/Bluprint) that I used in a quilt in 2018.

Speaking of Bluprint...I can't believe they're closing. I placed an order with them on May 26 and then two days later found out they were closing they're doors. Still waiting on news about the classes I have though I did download all the patterns I have. Maybe I'll try to figure out how to download the classes too.

Anyway...back to Amelia...

The pattern is called Coconut Chips by Madison Cottage. 

The binding and backing fabrics are from thrift store sheets and the quilting is my usual straight line quilting diamond pattern. The quilt finished at 59" x 67".

Star Gardener Quilt - A Quilt Made Entirely from Sheets

Hey everyone!

I just wanted to stop in and share my newest quilt finish with you all. As the title of this post states, this quilt was made entirely from thrift store sheets. There has been a lot of buzz on Pinterest and Etsy about vintage sheets. Most of my sheets are not vintage which I'm okay with because most vintage sheets are not 100% cotton which is what I try to find when I go to the thrift store.  

I started using thrift store sheets for the backings of my quilts because I can get a King size sheet for $8.00 or less depending on which store I go to and if its a 50% off color tag. And the older it is the cheaper it is. Plus I get to add to my fabric stash when I don't use leftover fabrics for the backs. 

So on to the quilt...

Have you ever started a quilt and then decided what you had planned wasn't making you happy. 

That's what happened on this quilt. This started as me trying to do a quilt based on the back of the Acadian Trellis quilt which you can see here.  It did not go well. The colors I was trying to use wasn't working and I was not happy. So I decided on a Starflower quilt and cut the strips into squares. But once I got all the pieces on the design board I decided I wanted it to be bigger. After some searching for ideas, I found this Star Gardener block and adapted it to make this quilt.    

  

                            

The quilt finished at 68" x 68" which I think is a nice cuddling up size.  Some of the fabric/sheets used were also used in the Wildflower Bouquet quilt. 

I quilted it in two different ways... in the ditch and also straight line quilting 1/4" on both sides of the vertical and horizontal seams.

For a quilt that I was not really happy with when I started, I think this came out pretty good and I'm looking forward to using it this summer as a picnic quilt.

Wildflower Bouquet - A Half Hexie Quilt

Hi everyone! I hope this post finds you happy, healthy, and sane. 

I got some awesome news yesterday... DSW and ARC Thrift stores in my area are now open. WOOHOO!!! So on Saturday, I plan to do some much-deserved shopping therapy. I CANNOT wait. Online shopping (which I've been doing a lot of) is great in a pinch but there's nothing like the real thing.

In the meantime...I have some photos to share with you of my latest finish - a half hexie quilt.

Ever since I started quilting I've loved the hexagon quilts that I've seen on Pinterest but knew that I wasn't cut out for English Paper Piecing. So you can imagine how happy I was when I saw a half hexie quilt. I purchased the Lori Holt Hexie Half Ruler set and found two tutorials that I liked - this one by Cloud9 Fabrics and this one by Southern Charm Quilts. After adapting the tutorials to what I wanted to make this is what I came up with.

I used the 10" hexie ruler and I absolutely LOVE this quilt. It was made using fabrics from my collection of thrift store sheets except for the red and dark blue floral, which are quilting fabrics from my stash. There are a total of 144 half hexies from 14 fabrics/sheets.  The quilting design that I used was included with the Cloud9 Fabrics tutorial. Basically, the design makes triangles that perfectly compliment the pattern.

This was super fun and really easy. I will definitely be making more half hexie quilts in the future.

Scrappy Spring Quilt

Hi everyone!  

I have a finished quilt to share with you today. I used the quilt pattern Scrappy Summer by Cluck Cluck Sew which you can find here. I made the throw size quilt and it was a super easy pattern to follow and I love how it turned out.  You know how much I love scrappy quilts. Every time I look at it it makes me smile because it's so bright and cheerful. I hope it makes you smile too. 

The print fabrics are from my stash, the white fabric is from a thrift store sheet and the solid color fabric is from Kona jelly rolls (Bright Rainbow and Candy Bright). 

The backing is a thrift store sheet that feels like it was meant for this quilt. And the binding was leftover jelly roll strips. The quilting design is my tried and true straight line quilting 1/4" on both sides of the seams going both vertically and horizontally. The quilt finished up at 56½" x 64½" (before washing).

My Scrappy Little Miss Sunshine Quilt

Hi everyone!!

I hope everyone is doing good, washing their hands and not going stir crazy. In case you didn't know, as of yesterday, there are 27 states with Stay-at-Home orders. Colorado's order went into effect on March 26th and I am already going a little nuts. Unlike most people, being at home every day has been my normal for a couple of years and right now I just want to get out of my house!!! 

I want to go shopping, I want to go visit my son in New Mexico, I want to go on our anniversary trip that we were planning before this new 'normal' started, I want to hang out with our friends in person and hug them to my heart's content, I want to drink beer at a bar instead of my couch, I want to shake hands with people I meet for the first time, I want to go to a baseball game, I want to see how far the Colorado Avalanche would have made it in the hockey postseason (hopefully the season will resume and we'll find out) ...I want to do all the things I took for granted last month...TODAY!!!

Okay...enough of my ranting...thanks for listening. I feel much better now.

Now back to quilting.

This is the quilt that I did during the Little Miss Sunshine quilt along that was run by Melanie at Southern Charm Quilts. It was my first QAL and I'm not sure I will do another one. It was fun and I learned a lot of new quilt blocks but I don't like to spread things out over such a long period of time.

The quilt was started on September 6th, 2019 and I finished it on March 6, 2020. There are 15 different star blocks and the background blocks are large 4-patches. Most of the blocks I had never done before so I learned a lot which is one of the reasons that I decided to take part in the QAL. I think I might do the pattern again but I will use a fabric bundle instead of making it scrappy.

The quilt finished at approximately 60" x 72". All the print fabrics, including the binding, are from my stash. The background fabric is a Low Volume Bundle purchased at Meander + Make (which is owned by Melanie of Southern Charm Quilts). And the back of the quilt is one of my thrift store sheets.

Spring Forward

Happy start of Daylight Savings!!!

I can feel spring in the air. This weekend its been in the high 60s -70s in Colorado and I found daffodils (my favorite flower) at the store. I love it. I am done with winter, though I'm sure we'll have another snow shower before too long.

Things have been kind of quiet in my quilting room for the past couple of weeks. Yesterday, I finished sewing the binding on the quilt I made during the Little Miss Sunshine QAL. I haven't taken any pictures of it yet so you'll have to wait until my next post to see pictures. Hopefully, that will happen next week.

I started a new quilt on Monday using the Scrappy Summer Quilt pattern from Cluck Cluck Sew. Still working on it but here's a little preview...

The other thing that I have been working on since my last post is my collection of thrift store sheets. I decided I wanted to spend some time organizing and cutting them up into usable sizes. So I brought some comic book boards and started ... and I only made it through 8 sheets. And this is what I have so far...

 I feel good about what I've done so far but when I look at all the ones still to do it just seems soooo overwhelming. But they look so nice all organized so I'll keep working on it. But I think I'll break it down to one sheet at a time. Some of the sheets I brought to use specifically for the backing so I'm not going to cut those up. 

I must say playing with them has given me a couple of quilting ideas. 

One idea is a half hexagon quilt like this one I found at Southern Charm Quilts.

And the Acadian Trellis quilt made by Kelly at My Quilt Infatuation which you can find here. This is the back of the quilt and love how it looks. I have some sheets that are similar in color which I think would look awesome.

Maybe I'll just have to do both.
